Can I tell you a secret? I don’t think I like this game. Whew, I’m glad that’s off my chest! Boggle is an oft-recommended game for spelling, but it’s one we haven’t really played yet.

I got Boggle when we first started gameschooling because it’s so frequently recommended. However, my kids were all of 3 and 5, and shockingly enough, not ready for a spelling game, particularly one that involves writing.

Now, my kids have recently started to enjoy some other spelling games, particularly when we play them cooperatively. They LOVE getting out their Bananagram tiles and creating words, and we’ve played both Bananagrams and Scrabble cooperatively with success. But none of those games require you to write down your words.

Boggle certainly has high points. It’s fun seeing what words you can create with so few letters to work with, and when I pulled the game out to take some pictures, we found quite a few. However, my kids have only barely begun writing, and it’s certainly not something I want to time them with.

The thing that most bothers me about Boggle is how LOUD it is. It’s a bunch of dice in a hard plastic case that you shake in their case, get them all in spots, then remove the lid to start finding your words. I didn’t know this about myself until after I had kids, but I’m actually pretty sensitive to loud noises.
